Overview

The Acer Nitro 5 AN515-57-79TD is a budget gaming laptop with a 144Hz, 15.6-inch FHD 1080p (1920×1080) screen that’s great for gaming, an 11th Gen Intel Core i7-11800H 2.3GHz 8C/16T CPU that delivers optimal performance under high workloads, and a dedicated NVIDIA RTX 3050Ti graphics chip that will play most games.

It comes with only 8GB DDR4 RAM, so I strongly recommend upgrading to 16GB, which I consider the minimum for a smooth gaming experience. Thankfully, it has a decent-sized 512GB NVMe SSD (WD SN530) storage, which should satisfy most users. It also has a spare PCIe 3.0 ×4 slot for a data drive.

Network connectivity consists of a bog-standard Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 port (Killer E2600 chip), Bluetooth 5.2, and a Killer Wi-Fi 6 1650i chip that boasts a 2.4Gbp/s throughput.

Ports are excellent with two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, and one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. It also has one HDMI port for an external display.

Windows 11 Home comes standard on the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-57-79TD.

Hardware

Let’s go into more detail about the hardware on the Acer Nitro 5.

CPU

It has an Intel Core i7-11800H Tiger Lake processor with 8-cores and 16-threads, running at a base clock of 2.30GHz and a boost clock of 4.60GHz. It has a 24MB Smart Cache, 8G/T bus speed, and pulls between 35w and 45w depending on workload. The chip uses a 10nm process with an FCBGA1787 socket. It also supports Intel SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX2, and AVX-512 instruction sets.

The Core i7-11800H can handle heavy workloads from video transcoding, gaming, and applications like 3DSMax, Adobe Creative Suite, and other resource-intensive programs.

Intel Core i7

Graphics

It has an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050Ti graphics chip running a base clock of 1485MHz, with 4GB DDR6 RAM, pulling up to 75 watts. It has 2560 CUDA, 20 Ray Tracing, and 80 Tensor cores.

The RTX 3050Ti GPU can handle most games without Ray Tracing enabled, but the 80 Tensor cores can be used for DLSS in some games for a performance boost.

NVIDIA GTX Series GPUs

Memory

The Nitro 5 only comes with a single module of 8GB DDR4 3200MHz SODIMM RAM, so I recommend upgrading to at least 16GB or 32GB as soon as possible. The Nitro 5 has a maximum RAM capacity of 64GB (2× 32GB modules).

DDR4 Memory

Storage

Thankfully the Nitro 5 comes with a 512GB M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD (WD SN530) and a spare unused PCIe slot for an additional (data) drive. I recommend the Samsung 980 Pro 2TB as a good price/performance additional M.2 drive.

NVMe Express

Network

The Nitro 5 comes with RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet, which uses a Killer E2600 chip, Bluetooth 5.2, and a Killer Wi-Fi 6 1650 chip with 2.4Gbp/s transfer speed. You will need a Wi-Fi router that supports the Wi-Fi 6 standard to get the full benefits/speed.

Display & Webcam

Powered by the RTX 3050Ti is a 15.6-inch, 144Hz, FHD 1080p screen that features IPS (In-Plane Switching) and Anti-Glare. It also has a backlit keyboard with a dedicated NitroSense button to display the current statistics of your laptop (temperature, fan speed, performance etc.). It also comes with an HD 720p webcam.

Audio

The Nitro 5 comes with DTS X, an object-based surround sound technology and successor to DTS HD, and a rival to Dolby Atmos technology. DTS X aims to create a multi-dimensional sound that “moves around you like it would in real life”.

I/O Ports

It has excellent connectivity with two USB 3.2 Gen 1-A ports and one each of USB 3.2 Gen 2-A and USB 3.2 Gen 2-C ports that can connect displays up to 4K (dual) 8K (single). You can also run an external monitor with the HDMI 2.1 port.
